Deacons Kyle Dwyer and Rick Schloss were ordained elders during the morning worship service Sunday, April 17. All photos were taken by Linda Elliott, member and Immanuel's Facebook page editor.

"So guard yourselves and God's people. Feed and shepherd God's flock -- his church, purchased with his own blood -- over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as leaders." ~ Acts 20:28 NLT

Proving to be a good example is the way to lead.

Changes are a-comin'
October 7-13, 2013

A gift was given to pay for new chairs and carpet squares in Immanuel's worship center.

The church pews were purchased for the building on Feb. 27, 1961, and removed on Oct. 7, 2013 ... that's 52 years! Cushions, added to the pews in May 1979 were also removed.

The blue carpet was installed in October 1977 and removed in October 2013 ... that's 36 years!

The changes have been hard to swallow by some ... what is wrong with the old? But times are a-changing, therefore changes are a-coming. As I have heard Pastor Dan say, these are simply tools to minister to souls, not hindrances. And others have also pointed out, we shouldn't be coming to the building to worship what we sit on, but rather the risen Savior.

Cushions were removed from the pews late Sunday afternoon, Oct. 6.

One of the shorter pews with cushions still intact

Red and blue hymnals and tables were moved into the foyer

The new chairs have currently taken up residency in the library

Letters received

Brother Paul Plavnick, a converted Jew,
 served as Northbrook’s first pastor
from August 1981 to July 31, 1990.

Greetings in the Name of our Precious Lord Jesus,

Although we are not able to be present personally, we rejoice with you as you celebrate the fiftieth year of the Immanuel community. We were a part of your history during the 1980's as you reached out to begin the Northbrook congregation, serving as Northbrook’s first full-time pastor during the building of their first building. As evidence of your desire to reach additional folks, Immanuel was instrumental in providing the land, encouraging and contributing to the raising of funds for the first building, and joining in the construction effort. Surely the Lord used your energy, wisdom, and discernment to launch this fledgling ministry. And surely the Lord has blessed Immanuel’s ministry because of your efforts as midwife for the Northbrook Congregation.

Marty and I are praying for you as you celebrate this weekend. May our Lord add the depth of His riches, building memories way into the future.

In His love,
Paul D. Plavnick

I have continued to serve as pastor of Southern Baptist congregations in Indiana – Richmond, Hammond, Elberfeld and Logansport.  To make ends come a little closer to meeting, I often substitute taught math and science in high schools, and for 15 years I taught math on the adjunct faculties of Indiana University East  in Richmond, University of Southern Indiana in Evansville and Ivy Tech Community College on the Evansville, Kokomo, and Logansport campuses.  In June 2007, I retired from the pastorate of New Beginnings Church in Logansport, from driving the after-school van for its day school, and from the adjunct faculty of Ivy Tech.  Marty and I bought a home in Marshfield, Mo., where we’re close to Marty’s almost 91-year-old mother and several of her eight siblings.

We have two children: our son, Scott, is a pastor in Mississauga (Greater Toronto), Ontario, and has three children, ages 19, 17, and 15; our daughter, Laura, is married to a pastor, now serving on the staff of a dynamic congregation in northwest Evansville, Ind.  They have two children, ages 16 and 13.

Marty currently is leading a fibromyalgia support group she started here in Marshfield, and I am coordinating prayer support for several recently-commissioned missionary families around the world.  A recent project has been to digitalize my Ferguson High School yearbook – 1958 Crest.

The Lord has surely blessed us during these 47+ years of marriage, and we’re enjoying these retirement years immensely.
