Nelson J. Engelbrecht
served from August 1969 to January 1970

Brother Nelson and his wife left Cedar Rapids Jan. 21, 1970, after accepting a call to the pastorate at Suburban Heights Church in Klamath Falls, Ore.



Paul Elledge
served from December 1975 to May 1976
 Brother Elledge is pastor emeritus at Emanuel Baptist Church in Overland Park, Kan.
During this time:

• Southern Baptist church established in Decorah
• Clothing ministry led by Carol Herr ended
• Puppet ministry began. Four puppeteers (Eric Winn as “Arnie,” Jeff Buscher as “Clem,” Denise Boyer as “Sally” and Gai Little as “Janey”) were trained under the direction of Anne Markham and Mildred Frantz.
• Youth lock-in held at the Ellis Branch YMCA in March 1976



Dr. Ed Roustio 
served from June 1981 to April 1982


During this time:

• The Alabama Singing Men presented a evening concert June 21, 1981.
• Lew Miller returned for a Bible Study held Sunday-Wednesday evenings, Aug. 23-26, 1981.
• State Baptist Student Convention held Oct. 30-31, 1981, for adults, college-career and senior high youth.
• Combined children’s choirs presented “Hey God Listen” on Nov. 8, 1981. Grades 1-3 became known as Kings Kids and grades 4-6 were Star Spangled Baptists.
• Immanuel sponsored a Christmas card shower in December 1981 for the Hydes, foreign missionaries to the Philippines.



Dr. O. Wyndell Jones
served from Dec. 23, 2001 to June 8, 2003



Membership was transferred from Cornerstone Baptist Church in Ankeny. His last Sunday with Immanuel was June 8, 2003, when he retired to Franklin, Tenn.

During this time:
• Quorum for business meetings was reduced from 50 to 35 members.
• A women’s tea for Dr. Jones’ wife, Audie, was held Saturday afternoon, Feb. 23, 2002.
• Living Sacrifice gospel quartet performed Saturday evening, Feb. 23.
• Welcoming Dinner for Dr. Jones and Audie on March 10, 2002. Dr. Jones recently retired as executive director of the Baptist Convention of Iowa in Des Moines.
• Matthew Wheeler, 14-year-old son of Jeff and Lu Wheeler, presented a piano concert of sacred and classical music and original works on May 5, 2002.
• Graduates at the high school, college and seminary levels were congratulated for their achievements in 2002: Erick Ahrendsen, Jennifer Klekar, Jeremy Owens and Ken and Jolene Livingston. In 2003, congratulations were given to Alaina Ahrendsen and to five Sudanese students who under the tutelage of Dr. Ed Roustio graduated from Seminary Extension on June 1. Dr. Ed Gregory was commencement speaker.
• The outdoor church sign was repaired.
• Fellowship meal with Korean Baptist Church was May 18, 2003.
• The worldwide premier of “Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch,” an animated film on the life of Christ, written and animated by David Estes with music by Matthew Wheeler, was presented at Immanuel on July 13, 2003.


Dave Sterrett
served from late November 2005 to May 21, 2006

A special business meeting was held Nov. 6, 2005, to call David Sterrett as interim pastor for six months.

During this time:
• Bob Smythe and Dave Sterrett were licensed to preach in November 2005.
• A monodrama of “Mary, The Mother of Jesus” was presented by Lora Schneider at Immanuel on Nov. 17, 2005. The event was sponsored by Youth at Heart ministries.
• Four-week study by Pastor Dave on illustrations from the Chronicles of Narnia and other writings by C.S. Lewis began Dec. 11, 2005. The movie, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” was shown in theaters Dec. 9.
• Birthday celebration open house for Dr. Roustio (Jan. 11) 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006. Lillian celebrated her 90th birthday May 21, 2006.
• Movie night, “Flywheel,” shown Jan. 22, 2006.
• Family fun night at Immanuel, 6-10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006.
• Former Muslim Abdoul Rahim, president of Building Bridges to the Truth, speaks during Jan. 29, 2006, service.
• Living Sacrifice quartet performed Feb. 12, 2006.
